Baghdad Women Association Participates in National Meeting on Combating Drug Use

Baghdad Women Association, represented by Ms. Reem Sahib, participated in an expanded meeting chaired by the Deputy Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Dr. Othman Al-Jahishi, and convened at the invitation of the Non-Governmental Organizations Directorate. The meeting brought together civil society organizations working on combating drugs, alongside representatives from the Ministries of Interior, Health, and Justice, to discuss the legal frameworks and legislation aimed at addressing and reducing this phenomenon.

Through its participation, the Association emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between governmental institutions and civil society organizations, as well as the need to strengthen awareness-raising initiatives to address the spread of drug use. Particular attention was given to the serious negative impacts of this issue on families and society, in addition to its linkage with the increase in violence cases observed in recent years.

The meeting further addressed laws and strategies aimed at reducing drug use and trafficking, while highlighting the roles of the relevant ministries. The resulting recommendations underscored the vital role of civil society organizations in raising public awareness about the risks of drugs, the necessity of intensifying awareness campaigns, and the importance of developing relevant legislation. Emphasis was also placed on strengthening the role of the family in protecting youth and fostering a socially aware generation capable of resisting this phenomenon
