Voluntary legal session

Baghdad_Women_Association staff at Duhok center implemented a voluntary legal session in the center, on 17 December, 2019 under the topic of (marriage outside the court and its disadvantages), within the project of “Strengthening Access to Protection, Participation and Services for women Refugees, Internally Displaced People IDPs and women in Host Communities in Iraq” which is funded by the European Union’s Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, the EU “MADAD Fund” with the support of Euro-Med Feminist Initiative (EFI).

The attendees of the session were 11 persons with the aim of reducing the phenomenon of marriage outside the court, and the marriage contract does not entail rights and obligations to the spouses, as women and girls were educated about its legal and social effects.

The results of the activity were to clarify the condition of the legislator in the Iraqi Personal Status Law in Article 10, paragraph (5) that the marriage be contracted within the competent Personal Status Court and the penalty prescribed for those who contracted marriage outside the court.
