16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence Campaign

The #Baghdad_women_association held a celebration on the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence Campaign at the Youth and Sports Forum in Al-Nasir, Baghdad, on 27 November 2019 in the framework of  the project “Strengthening Access to Protection, Participation and Services for women Refugees, Internally Displaced People IDPs and women in Host Communities in Iraq” which is funded by the European Union’s Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, the EU “MADAD Fund” with the support of Euro-Med Feminist Initiative (EFI)

The celebration was attended by 105 persons from the civil society organizations, activists, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the Department of Social Protection for Women, as well as tribal elders, religious representatives, the community police, women from targeted groups during the awareness workshops held previously within the project, as well as institutions working in the field of women’s rights, media and youth teams..

The celebration was inaugurated with a welcoming speech and the national anthem followed by a silent play about the impact of violence against women in society and homeless women. A small activity followed that included a paragraph writing with love and peace for women and praising their great role in life, in addition to legal consultations within the Iraqi Personal Status Law on women’s issues as presented by the lawyer. A second play about early marriages and its effects on girls was also performed. In another activity, the poet and painter denounced beating women and emphasized on the need to treat women with respect and affection, in addition to the keys activity that carry the principles of human rights to the public to raise awareness to the audience.

The event concluded with the distribution of roses to women as a symbolic expression of love and respect embedded in messages that praise the power of women.
